In late 1954, a committee from First Lutheran Church began the task of planning a new Missouri Synod Lutheran congregation and locating a site in southwest Omaha on which to build a church. Pacific Hills Lutheran Church was born.
The first meeting of prospective members was held at the Sidles Co. sales auditorium, at 74th and Pacific Streets, on April 17, 1955, One week later, the congregation's first worship service was conducted. Dr. Lawrence Acker, Pastor Emeritus at First Lutheran, served as interim pastor.
Two years of activity followed. Highlights include:
- June 12, 1955: approval of the church's Articles of Incorporation, The list of charter communicant members included 121 names.
- July 1, 1955: organization of a building committee to arrange for design and construction of a new church.
- April 26, 1956: ground is broken at 90th and Pacific Streets.
- June 16, 1957: worship services are held for the first time in the new building. Formal dedication services follow one week later.
Rapid growth, under the leadership of the Rev, Donald Fichtelmann, followed. By 1959, the congregation had grown to 352 communicant members, More space was needed, Construction of a new educational wing began in late 1962 and was finished less than one year later.
Plans were made in 1967 to buy a new pipe organ using funds pledged by an anonymous donor. This required extensive reconstruction of the church balcony to accommodate the new organ, but the donated funds were enough to cover these costs and also to finance the purchase of the stained glass windows that grace the sanctuary.
On May 4, 1980, Pacific Hills celebrated its 25th anniversary with two special services and a banquet at Peony Park, which included all current and former pastors, and many friends and former members.
An extensive building repair, renovation and remodeling project was completed in 1987 to update the education wing and the sanctuary structure to assure compliance with all building and fire codes. In September of that year, the parish hall was renamed "Acker Hall" and rededicated in honor of Rev. Lawrence Acker, Pacific Hills' founding pastor.
Pacific Hills has celebrated its 35th and 65th anniversaries, and embarked on its most challenging capital fund drive, the "Blessed to be a Blessing" campaign; its objective was to raise adequate funds to retire the mortgage debt on the church building, to refurbish the sanctuary, and to expand the ministry programs of education, evangelism, missions and social ministry.
