Music of the Epiphany Season

During Epiphany, the music chosen for worship not only reflects the theological themes of the season but also fosters a sense of spiritual journey within the congregation. Organ preludes and postludes based on Epiphany hymn tunes, such as “Wie schön leuchtet” (“How Brightly Shines the Morning Star”), can set a reflective and expectant tone for worship. Choirs have the opportunity to enhance the season’s message through anthems that emphasize light and mission, drawing from Scripture passages such as Isaiah 60 and Matthew 2. These musical selections create a worship environment that encourages contemplation on Christ’s revelation and respond with faith and action.

As the season concludes with the Feast of the Transfiguration, the music gradually shifts from celebration to a tone of preparation for Lent. This transition can be marked by hymns that focus on Christ’s glory and the call to discipleship, helping worshippers embrace the journey ahead. Music during Epiphany serves as a bridge between the joy of Christ's revelation and the introspection of the Lenten season. By carefully selecting and planning music for Epiphany services, my goal is to guide the congregation to contemplate Christ’s presence and our role in sharing His light with the world.
