As Easter approaches, Christians around the world embark on a profound spiritual journey marked by reflection and prayer. This period, known as Holy Week, begins with Palm Sunday and culminates in the joyous celebration of Easter Sunday. Each day of Holy Week holds significant meaning and commemorates the final days of Jesus and his life on earth.
Palm Sunday: The Triumphal Entry heralds the start of Holy Week. It commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, an event greeted with great jubilation by his followers who shouted “Hosanna,” and laid palm branches on the road before him as a sign of victory and peace.
Holy Monday: Holy Monday recalls Jesus’ act of driving the money changers and merchants from the Temple in Jerusalem. He also curses the fig tree.
Holy Tuesday: On Holy Tuesday, the authority of Jesus is questioned, and the narrative focuses on Jesus and his interactions with the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem, highlighting the growing tensions leading up to his crucifixion. Jesus is also anointed for burial.
Holy Wednesday: This day is also known as “Spy Wednesday” as Judas agrees to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
Maundy Thursday: This a day of profound importance, commemorating the Last Supper Jesus shared with his disciples. During this meal, Jesus instituted the Eucharist of his body and blood. Later that night, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was betrayed by Judas.
Good Friday: Good Friday marks the day of Jesus’ crucifixion and death at Calvary for us and for our salvation.
Holy Saturday: This is a day of waiting and watching, and a day of quiet preparation for the celebration of the resurrection.
