Celebrating 70 Years

Mark your calendars for a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Pacific Hills Lutheran Church.

• Sunday, June 8: Special worship service at 9 a.m. with former pastors and the Rev. Dr. William G. Moorhead as guest preacher.

Reflecting on PHLC history:

• Pacific Hills was the result of a dream of First Lutheran Church leaders to plant an LCMS congregation in southwest Omaha.
• In January 1955, land at 90th and Pacific Streets -- where a developer had intended to build a gas station -- was selected for the new church.
• The name Pacific Hills was selected due to the hilly area and the subdivision that was being built along Pacific Street.
• The first meeting of prospective members was held on April 17, 1955, at Sidles Co. sales auditorium at 74th and Pacific Streets. The first worship services were held there on April 24, 1955.
• The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Acker, pastor emeritus at First Lutheran Church, served as interim pastor.
• Pacific Hills was officially organized on June 12, 1955, with the signing of 121 charter members, 92 transfers from First Lutheran and 29 people from other area congregations.
• Ground was broken with a plow being pulled by members of First Lutheran and PHLC on April 29, 1956.
• The first worship services in the new church were held on June 16, 1957. The cost of the building and furnishings was $250,000.
• The motto "Come Unto Me" (Matthew 11:28), which is inscribed under the figure of Christ on the north side of the church building, was intended to share the life-giving good news of the Gospel that is professed at PHLC.
• By 1959, the congregation had grown to 352 members with the calling of a new pastor. By 1964, PHLC had grown to more than 500 members (13 of whom still are members).

Throughout 2025 and into 2027, we will observe Pacific Hills' 70th anniversary. Special offerings will be set aside to erect an electronic sign at the corner of 90th and Pacific.

We thank God for the hopes and labors of our charter members in establishing Pacific Hills Lutheran Church and look for guidance in bringing the Good News of the Gospel of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ to others in the years to come.
